Ingrown Toenail Treatment in Warrington
Quick Relief from Painful, Infected or Persistent Ingrown Nails
Ingrown toenails can be incredibly painful. Whether it’s a nagging edge digging into your
skin, a swollen, angry toe that won’t settle down, or an infection that keeps coming back,
you don’t have to put up with it.
I’m Dianne, a private podiatrist in Warrington with decades of experience treating all kinds
of toenail problems, including the really stubborn, deep or infected ones. Whether your
issue is brand new or has been going on for years, you’ll get honest advice and
straightforward treatment options that actually work.
What Is an Ingrown Toenail?
An ingrown toenail happens when the edge or corner of your toenail grows into the
surrounding skin. It most commonly affects the big toe and can be caused by:
– Poor nail cutting technique (like cutting down the sides or nail picking)
– Tight or ill-fitting shoes
– Genetics (some people just have naturally curved nails)
– Previous trauma to the toe
Symptoms can include:
– Pain or tenderness along one or both sides of the nail
– Swelling, redness, or inflammation
– Discharge or infection (if the skin is broken)
It might start as a mild discomfort but can quickly become a constant source of pain—
especially if it gets infected.
How I Treat Ingrown Toenails at My Warrington Clinic
Treatment depends on the severity of your case and what’s been tried before. Options
include:
✅ Nail Trimming & Conservative Management
If it’s caught early, gentle trimming and clearing the nail edge might be all that’s needed. I
can show you how to keep it comfortable at home and avoid future problems.
✅ Infection ManagementIf there’s an infection, I can clean and dress the toe, and if needed, supply prescription-only
antibiotics under my POMS qualification or recommend suitable topical treatments.
✅ Nail Surgery (Partial or Total Nail Removal)
For recurring or severe cases, a minor surgical procedure under local anaesthetic, usually
booked as a separate treatment appointment, can solve the problem for good.
Occasionally, if time allows and it’s safe to do so, it may be carried out during your
consultation. I remove the problem section of the nail (or occasionally the whole nail) and
apply a chemical to stop it growing back.
It’s a **permanent solution** for people who are constantly dealing with pain, dressings, or
repeat infections.
You can walk in and walk out the same day, and I provide a full aftercare package;
monitoring your wound healing and supplying you with the necessary redressing materials
to keep recovery on track.
Common Questions About Ingrown Toenail Surgery
**”Is it painful?”**The toe is fully numbed before the procedure. Most people say the
anaesthetic injection is the worst part—after that, it’s pain-free.
**”Will it grow back?”**In most cases, no. I use a chemical to prevent regrowth of the
problem section. But if it does regrow, it can be treated again.
**”How long is the recovery?”**Most people are back in normal shoes the day after surgery,
when I remove the initial post-op dressing and apply a smaller one. You’ll also get your own
redressing materials to use between follow-up appointments. While normal walking is
usually fine pretty quickly, you may need to avoid swimming, heavy exercise, or anything
that could disturb the wound or expose it to infection.
**”Can I drive afterwards?”**It’s generally not recommended, as the toe will be numb and
your reaction times may be affected. Some insurance companies may also consider you unfit
to drive while under the effects of a local anaesthetic, which could impact your cover in the
event of an accident.
